What is wheelchair transportation?

Wheelchair transportation is a scheduled, non-emergency ride in a van built to carry a passenger while they stay seated in their wheelchair. The rider rolls onto a powered lift or ramp, and the driver locks the chair to the van floor with a four-point securement system and fastens a lap and shoulder belt.

It suits people who use a wheelchair full time, can't manage the step into a car, or tire too easily to walk from the curb to a clinic. Families book it for doctor visits, dialysis, therapy, and trips home from the hospital. It is not an ambulance: the driver is trained in safe transfers and CPR, but no medical care is given during the ride. At Naeli, the driver also helps from the front door to the clinic's front desk, and back.

What every wheelchair ride includes

Automated lift boarding
The lift raises the rider in their own chair, so there's no lifting or transfer.
Four-point securement
The chair is strapped to the floor at four points, plus a lap and shoulder belt for the rider.
Door-through-door help
The driver helps from inside the home to the check-in desk, and back at pickup.
A trained driver
PASS certified, CPR and first-aid trained, background checked, and certified on the lift.
Round trips and standing rides
Book the return at the same time, or set up a weekly schedule for therapy or dialysis.
Clean, climate-controlled vans
Vehicles are inspected and sanitized on a regular schedule.

How to get ready for a wheelchair ride

  1. 1 Tell dispatch the chair type (manual, power, or transport chair) and roughly how wide it is.
  2. 2 Mention steps, a steep driveway, or a gate at the pickup address.
  3. 3 Have the appointment time and the clinic's full address ready when you call.
  4. 4 Bring a list of medications and any paperwork the clinic asked for.
  5. 5 If a family member will ride along, tell us when you book.

Questions

Wheelchair Transportation questions

How much does wheelchair transportation cost?

The price depends on the distance, the wait time, and whether you need a round trip. Call dispatch at (404) 390-9956 with both addresses and we'll quote the price before you book. Nothing is charged until you agree to it.

Can I stay in my power wheelchair during the ride?

Yes, in most cases. Our lifts and securement systems handle manual and power wheelchairs. Tell dispatch the make or approximate width and weight when you book so we send the right van.

Does Medicare pay for wheelchair van transportation?

Original Medicare does not cover wheelchair van rides. Some Medicare Advantage plans include a transportation benefit, so check your plan. Our guide on Medicare transportation coverage explains the rules.

How far ahead should I book a wheelchair ride?

Book 24 to 48 hours ahead when you can. We can often take same-day requests, so call dispatch to check.
